Introducing Apple Watch Ultra

Inspired by extreme sports, Apple unveils a revolutionary new design with breakthrough capabilities

Apple today announced Apple Watch Ultra, which offers a brand new, bold design and a variety of features designed to last, exploration, and adventure. Apple Watch Ultra introduces a 49mm titanium case and a flat sapphire front glass that shows the largest and brightest Apple Watch display yet. A customizable Action button offers immediate access to a broad array of features. Apple Watch Ultra has the longest battery longevity of any Apple Watch, reaching up to 36 hours in normal use.1 Additionally, a new low-power setting, ideal for multi-day adventures can extend the battery life to reach up to 60 hours.2 The Wayfinder watch face was specifically designed for the larger Apple Watch Ultra display and includes a compass built into the dial, with the capacity to accommodate up to eight different complications. Apple Watch Ultra also brings three new bands — Trail Loop, Alpine Loop and Ocean Band — offering distinctive design features that offer the most safe and comfy fit for any adventure.

Apple Watch Ultra is available to order today, with availability beginning Friday, September 23.

“Inspired by explorers and athletes from around the world, we created an entirely new category of Apple Watch designed for new and extreme environments — it’s the most rugged and capable Apple Watch yet,” said Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer. “Apple Watch Ultra is a versatile tool that empowers users to push their boundaries with adventure, endurance, and exploration.”

Bigger, Brighter, and Stronger

Made from aerospace-grade titanium, Apple Watch Ultra provides the perfect balance of weight and durability, as well as corrosion resistance. The case can cover all edges of the flat sapphire front crystal and protects the Retina display, which has at a maximum brightness of 2000 nits- 2x brighter than any Apple Watch display yet. The brand new Action button, which is high-contrast international orange is easily customized for immediate access to a wide range of features, such as Workouts, Compass Waypoints, Backtrack and many more.

Apple Watch Ultra has three built-in microphones that significantly improve sound quality in conversations in all conditions. A beamforming algorithm that is adaptive uses the microphones to record voice while reducing background noise, resulting in amazing clarity. In windy conditions, Apple Watch Ultra uses advanced wind noise-reduction algorithms, such as machine learning, to deliver clear and clear audio for calls.

New Bands Designed for the Great Outdoors

Created specifically for endurance athletes and runners, the Trail Loop is specifically designed for runners and endurance athletes, the Trail Loopband is the thinnest Apple Watch band to date. The lightweight woven textile is both soft and flexible that allows it to adjust to the perfect fit, and the convenient tab is designed to allow quick and easy adjustment.

With explorers in mind, with explorers in mind, the Alpine Loop band features two layers of integrated construction, resulting from a continuous weaving process that eliminates the requirement to stitch. The upper loops, woven with high-strength yarn, offer flexibility and secure attachment for the titanium G hook fastener.

The Ocean Band is specifically designed for extreme water activities and recreational diving. It comes with the titanium buckle and spring-loaded loop. Molded from an elastic fluoroelastomer, it expands and uses the tubular geometry for an incredibly secure fit. The Ocean Band also has an optional extra-long tail that permits users to wear it over the wetsuit.

Endurance Sports and Elite Athletes

Apple Watch Ultra is an incredible tool to help endurance athletes and those looking to push themselves to the limit. For the first time on the history of an Apple Watch, the precision dual-frequency GPS integrates L1 and the latest frequency L5 plus new positioning algorithms. Apple Watch Ultra delivers the most precise GPS of any Apple Watch to date, offering users with the most precise distance, pace, and route information for training and competing.

Apple Watch Ultra is powered by watchOS 9, which includes new advanced running metrics to assess performance, such as Stride Length and Ground Contact Time and Vertical Oscillation and Running Power. New workout views, like Segments Splits, Segments, and Elevation, provide important metrics at only a glance. And because of the larger display, Apple Watch Ultra is the only Apple Watch that can show six metrics simultaneously. Users can elevate their training to the next level by using features such as Heart Rate Zones, Custom Workouts Pacer, and, due later this year the Race Route. For duathlons, triathlons, or activities with any sequence of biking, swimming, or running, the new Multisport workout features autodetection that allows you to effortlessly switch between exercises. Apple Watch Ultra has enough battery life for most users to finish a triathlon of a long distance, comprised of the 2.4-mile swim and bike ride of 112 miles and a full marathon of 26.2 miles.

The Action button will immediately begin workouts and take users to the next segment of a custom workout or the next stage of an Multisport workout. It can also be used to identify segments, complementing the brand-new Track running feature, which provides the best pacing and distance estimations for runners at the track.3

Explorers

With its larger, brighter display and rugged style, Apple Watch Ultra is the ideal technical device for explorers and adventurers in a variety of settings, from the every day to extreme. The completely revamped Compass application that comes with watchOS 9 provides more in-depth information and three distinct views. The app features a brand new hybrid view that shows an analog compass dial, as well as digital views. Turning the Digital Crown reveals an additional view that displays latitude longitude, elevation and incline as well as an orienteering view showing Compass Waypoints and Backtrack.

Compass Waypoints are a quick and convenient method of marking an area or point of interest directly in the app. Clicking the Action button or tapping the Compass Waypoint icon drops a waypoint which can be edited by pressing the icon which appears. The Compass Waypoint complication is updated dynamically in real time in both directions of the waypoint and its approximate distance.

Backtrack utilizes GPS data to generate an outline of where the user has been in, which is helpful if they get lost or lost and need help finding their way back. It can also turn off auto-pilot in the background if it is off the grid. With a single press of the Action button, users can quickly remove the Compass Waypoint or start or view a Backtrack. An 86-decibel siren is made for emergencies, in case users become lost or injured and assist in attracting attention to a location. The unique sound signature incorporates two distinct alternating patterns, which can last for up to a few hours. The first pattern suggests distress and the second one mimics the well-known SOS pattern. For backpacking trips lasting more than a day battery life can be extended by at least 60 hours with low Power Mode plus an additional low-power setting that reduces frequency of GPS and heart rate readings.

The operating temperature of the wrist was created to allow you to explore the most extreme and remote locations, from freezing cold mountains at -4deg F (-20deg C) to the scorching desert heat of 131 degrees F (55deg C).4 Apple Watch Ultra is certified to the relevant elements of MIL-STD-810H that are used in military equipment and popular among manufacturers of rugged equipment. Tests include Low Pressure (Altitude) High Temperature, Low Temperature Temperature Shock, contamination by Fluids, Rain, Humidity as well as Immersion, Sand, Dust, Freeze/Thaw, Shock, Ice/Freezing, Vibration and much more. To make the most of evening conditions Turning the Digital Crown makes the interface red for better visibility in dark conditions with the Wayfinder face.

Ocean and Water Sports Enthusiasts

Apple Watch Ultra is designed to support water sports, such as extreme sports like kitesurfing and wakeboarding, as well as recreational scuba diving that goes to 40 meters with the new Oceanic+ app. To aid in these underwater adventures, Apple Watch Ultra is certified to WR100. Apple Watch Ultra is designed to reduce the environmental footprint of its products. It features recycled gold plating on multiple printed circuit boardswhich is a first for Apple Watch — as and 100 % recycled rare earth elements throughout all magnets and 100 percent recycled tungsten in the Taptic Engine. Display glass is free of arsenic, and Apple Watch Ultra is mercuryBFR-, – PVC- and beryllium-free. There is no Apple Watch packaging uses outer plastic wrap and at least 98 percent of the packaging is fiber based which brings Apple closer to its target of removing plastic from its packaging by 2025.

Today, Apple is carbon neutral for its global corporate operations and, by 2030, the company plans to be 100 percent carbon-free across all manufacturing supply chains and all product life cycles. That means every Apple device sold from component production assembly, transport customers’ use, charging, and all the way by recycling materials and resource recovery will have net-zero climate impact.

Privacy

Privacy is an essential aspect of the development and design process across all of Apple’s features. When a user’s iPhone is locked using a passcode or Touch ID, or Face ID and all of their health and fitness information in the Health app — other than Medical ID — is encrypted. Any Health data that is backed to iCloud is encrypted during transit and on Apple servers. In the case of iOS or watchOS with the default two-factor authentication and passcode, Health app data synced to iCloud is encrypted from end-to-end, meaning that Apple does not have the key to decrypt the data and therefore is unable to read it.
