More protests over Jeffco curriculum

A week full of protests over proposed revisions of the Jefferson County School District’s Advanced Placement U.S. History (APUSH) curriculum continued Friday, Sept. 26.

About 60 protesters, a mix of parents and students, held a morning protest at the corner of W. Bowles Avenue and S. Kipling Street around 8 a.m. 

A week earlier, some 50 teachers from Conifer and Standley Lake high schools called in sick to protest recent Jeffco Board of Education actions, including the passage of a controversial teacher compensation package, as well as the APUSH proposal.

Students from Standley Lake, used the free time to stage protests in front of their schools.

Since then, multiple high schools have staged walk-out protests during each school day.

The APUSH resolution, penned by school board member Julie Williams, seeks to ensure the material emphasizes positive aspects of American history and “should not encourage or condone” civil disobedience, social strife or disregard of the law.

As of Thursday at noon, the resolution was not slated to be on the Oct. 2 board meeting agenda, but that could change. According to board policy, the board must receive the full agenda by the Friday prior to the meeting, but a member can add an agenda item for discussion at any time.

The board of education will have a regular meeting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Jefferson County Education Center, 1829 Denver West Drive, in Golden.
