Inside the works

On Oct. 13 during a city council meeting, 10 people were handed a diploma and a special gift –; their very own street sign –; for completing the City of Golden’s Public Works Citizens’ Academy.

The 20-hour program is designed to demonstrate how the public works department operates and how it provides services to the community. Participants got to tour a water treatment plant, visit a city reservoir, learn about environmental services, participate in a variety of discussions, witness street maintenance and pavement management demonstrations and work with a geographic information system (GIS).

“As citizens, you don’t often think about what goes into making the city run,” said Kristen Wrona upon receiving her diploma. Seeing it first-hand makes Wrona proud to live in Golden, she said, because of the hard work and dedication shown on a daily basis by city staff and crews.

Participants had the opportunity to interact with crews, and see how much knowledge employees have and the pride they take in doing their jobs, said Shauna Paulson, the public works admin coordinator.

“Not only was the program beneficial for the citizens, it also gave our crews the opportunity to show off their skills, which proved to be a great morale booster,” Paulson said.
