Time for some spring cleaning

With all the wet and cold weather over the last few weeks it might have slipped your mind that it’s Spring cleaning time once again, and also time to take advantage of an annual event that the City of Golden sponsors to help get rid of all that debris collected throughout the Winter months.

It’s Golden Community Pride Days this coming weekend, Saturday May 2 and Sunday May 3.

As we all know, taking a trip to the dump can cost a lot of money, and there are certain things that you need to dispose of that aren’t even allowed. This is an opportunity to get rid of tons of stuff and do it for free.

Here’s the scoop. It will be taking place at the City Shops facility located at 1300 Catamount Drive here in Golden. So where the heck is that, huh? Well, it’s on the north end of town off of Hwy. 93 as you start up Golden Gate Canyon Road. It will be the first public road on your right. I’m sure they will have plenty of signs guiding you once you get there.

It’s going to be 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on both days and available for Golden residents only, so bring along proof of residence by either showing a current driver’s license with your address or a current water bill. Remember, many Golden mailing addresses are not within the city limits so you might want to check your address using the Jefferson County Address Wizard at www.jeffco.us/awiz/.

So what can you dispose of? Here’s the list. Household trash, electronic waste, unlimited paper shredding, metal recycling, tires, tree brush, mattresses and box springs. Things you can’t bring include propane tanks, batteries, pharmaceuticals and hazardous waste. It would probably be a good idea not to bring anything that might explode or that you need to wear a hazmat suit to handle.

As you can see this is a great chance to get rid of some difficult things. If you have a friend with a pick-up truck, this would be a good weekend to borrow it.

If you have an old bicycle you want to recycle, bring that along too. People from the Golden Optimists Bicycle Recycle program will be on hand along with Golden Boy Scouts to collect them. They repair them and give them to lots of folks who need a bike like international students from the Colorado School of Mines, teachers, kids, families, the homeless and veterans who need bicycles for transportation. They also donate then for local Christmas giving programs and to kids of the Navajo Nation.

Large appliance disposal

Although you can’t bring your refrigerator to Golden Community Pride Days, for a limited time you can get rid of your large appliances by getting in touch with Paul Burkholder at the City of Golden by calling (303) 384-8142. Just call for an appointment and they will send someone over to your house to pick them up at curbside. Yes, it’s free.

You’ll need to provide the following information. Your name, address, phone number, the items to be picked up, and the date the items will be left at curbside.

Don’t wait too long if you need to use this service, they won’t be offering it indefinitely.
