My Name Is… Barb Robie of Golden

About the shopMy parents own Del’s Tonsorial Parlor and Barbershop, and I manage it. I’ve been here for 20 years. Jan. 4 was my anniversary. This was my first job. I worked here for one year before my parents purchased it from Del Miller. It’s one of the oldest barbershops in Golden. Del took it over in 1959.We’re family haircare. We pride ourselves on quality haircare and making everybody happy. We try to keep up with the trends, but we also do the traditional flat tops, high and tights, and the hot lather shaves with a straight razor.A hair callingI started doing hair when I was a little girl. I did my friends’ hair and my brother’s hair. My grandmother lived with us for awhile, and I used to do her nails and roll her hair.My mom always said I like to talk a lot, so I needed to get into a business where I get to talk to people. I guess it was my calling. We’re kind of therapists. We keep up with our clients’ lives, and they keep up with ours. I hear lots of good stories.Enjoying the great outdoorsI love camping and fishing. I go to Taylor Reservoir up by Gunnison. I like the fresh air, and up there, there’s no cell service. My kids and I like to go to hike and fish. We enjoy each other’s company. My oldest daughter, Nichol, is 27 and she just graduated from the Colorado School of Mines. My second daughter is Alexandra. She’s 18 and just graduated from Golden High School. My youngest is my son, Garrett, who is 16 and a junior at Golden High School. They’re great kids.Golden or Mayberry?I enjoy working with the people. I have a fabulous staff and great clientele — the best in Golden. We have clients who have been coming in for 50 years. My dad comes in every morning and makes coffee and opens up the shop. People come in to have coffee and chat — they’re not even getting a haircut. It’s like the Mayberry R.F.D. People feel comfortable coming here.I’m 48 and I’ve lived in Golden for 44 years. I like the small-town feel of Golden. I like the festivals and community gatherings. This is a great community. I’m very fortunate to have a shop right in downtown Golden.
