Music, a movie and a community, in the park

Colorful blankets and low-sitting lawn chairs covered about a quarter of Parfet Park by the time the music began –; promptly at 7 p.m.

Young children danced without care to the sounds of PJ Zahn, a mix of some funk tunes, and covers of Tom Petty or John Mellencamp.

Katie and Eric Steinert of Littleton had a good time at Golden’s movies in the park last Friday, and decided to come again.

“It’s a good atmosphere,” Eric said. “Laid-back and the music is good.”

Lots of kids were down by Clear Creek, climbing on the fish statues, now that the river is low enough to do so. Other kids preferred to climb on dragon statues on the other side of the park.

Footballs were being tossed around, and there was a volleyball game going on.

“It’s something fun to do with the family,” Nicole Elissami of Golden said. “My son is running around, having a good time.”

A long line formed at the ice cream stand, and other people opted for a bag of warm popcorn.

PJ Zahn finished its set, and night had fallen. People stopped milling around, and began to settle into their spot to watch the movie.

A play off the symbolic Hollywood sign in California, “Goldenwood,” with Golden’s Table Mountains, appeared on the large outdoor movie screen. That was followed by previews of upcoming movies for Golden’s Movies in the Park series.

Soon, the feature presentation was on. For 97 minutes, everybody was engaged in Disney’s “Maleficent.”

Thirteen-year-old Sepand Ardehali thought it was a good movie.

“I liked the ending,” he said.
