Historically inspired arts and crafts classes offered at Clear Creek History Park
Golden History Museums is offering a series of new Heritage Arts & Crafts classes starting at 1 p.m. on Oct. 19 that teach practical historic skills and crafts to make tasty meals and practice sustainable living.
Historian and instructor Priscilla Marshall explains, “My classes are never about listening to a lecture. They’re designed so that participants can use their own creativity and imagination as they apply first-hand the information they hear in class.” Marshall has over 20 years’ experience in the field.
Participants will make festive, decorative, and useful scarecrows for their gardens out of materials found around their homes in the Oct. 19 “Boo! Who’s Been Watching Your Garden?” class.
“You wouldn’t guess it, but the earliest Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Japanese all made scarecrows to guard their gardens and fields,” says Marshall. “There is no better way to understand the past than to live it in the present.”
Participants must be at least six years old, and children are welcome with a participating adult parent or guardian. Golden History Museums’ members are invited to participate for $15 and non-members for $18.
The final class in the series, “Leftovers to Luxuries,” demonstrates early examples of recycling or “up-cycling” techniques. Students will learn the historic background of the knotted rag rug which was found in many Colorado homesteads and is unique to North America. Participants will start rugs that can be finished at home. The class will be held on Nov. 8 from 10 a.m. to noon, and can accommodate participants at least 10 years old with a participating adult parent or guardian. The cost is $10 for museum members and $15 for non-members; students must bring rags and a pair of scissors to participate.
