Golden man shot early morning July 20

A Golden man remains in the hospital in critical condition after being shot in the 800 block of Kilmer Street in Golden at about 2 a.m. July 20.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is withholding his identification until his family could be notified.

Neighbor Gene Abbott reported he did not hear any gunshots, but woke up because his animals were making a lot noise. When he went to check on them, he didn’t see anything awry, and went back to bed.

However, another neighbor, Matt, who declined to provide his last name for identification purposes, said he was awake at the time of the incident. At about 1:50 a.m., he said he heard gunshots, a car speeding up and people screaming, but did not see anything.

“I used to live in a pretty bad neighborhood,” Matt said. “I never expected anything like this to happen here.”

A neighbor adjacent to the victim’s home agreed.

“It’s a little scary,” John Carl said, who said he’s never been in proximity to “anything like this before.”

Authorities arrived on scene at about 2:15 a.m., Carl said.

As of the afternoon of July 20, investigators were still on scene, and allowing people to come and go from neighboring properties with identification.

Information on the suspect, and a motive for the shooting, are unclear at this time, authorities stated.

The investigation is being handled by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
