Demons win fourth game of season

The Golden field hockey team improved its overall record to 4-1-1with a 2-0 win over Mountain Vista on Sept. 15.

“We plays a good game today on both ends of the field,” Demons coach Marissa Copan said after the game. “Our offense was effective and we were fortunate enough to keep the ball on the Mountain Vista goal side of midfield most of the time.”

The teams were like boxers sparring early in the game as each team tried to determine the best strategy. About midway through the first half, Golden mounted a determined attack, getting the ball in deep in front of the Golden Eagles goal. Several shots were blocked or deflected but finally a shot found the back of the net. Minutes later, in almost a carbon copy situation, the Demons scored again to go ahead 2-0. Mountain Vista mounted a number of attacks but, in each case, the ball either went wide or was deflected as Golden recorded the 2-0 win.

Golden’s first goal was scored by Marin Feisoci with 15:54 left in the first half. About four minutes later Bo Shaffer scored the second Demons goal. Teammates Jan Lanuza and Hannah Kratz were each credits with an assist. The defenses played well Golden goalie Mackenzie Winchester for Golden made five saves.

Coach Copan said the Demons are a team with depth and varsity experience.

“We are a solid team this season,” she said. “I think we play well when we are on offense and our defense is strong. The league is tough but I feel we can be right in there with the leaders.”

One of the seniors, Emily Hipp, plays center forward for Golden. She said she has been playing field hockey since she was in fourth grade and said it is her game.

“I grew up in Virginia where field hockey is very popular,” she said after the game. “It is a great sport. I love playing center forward because you are always involved in the play so it is an important position. It also feels really good to score goals.”

She said she would like to score more goals but most importantly, she just wants to make plays and help her team win.

Golden continues play in the coming weeks. The Demons travel to Grandview Sept. 26 and, on Sept 29, face Denver East at All-City Stadium. The next home game is Oct. 1 against Kent Denver.
