Andrea Mitchell: Obama’s Trayvon Martin comments came ‘with no warning’

When President Obama dropped in on the White House press corps this afternoon, who could have suspected he’d make the George Zimmerman case somehow about him? His comment last year about his hypothetical son looking like Trayvon Martin should have been a clue that’d he wouldn’t let the opportunity for a follow-up pass, but to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell, the president’s “personal” take on the case came out of the blue. His surprise appearance, along with his introductory disclaimer, “The reason I actually wanted to come out today is not to take questions,” should have cushioned the shock.

What did she think he was going to talk about in his rare personal appearance? His promise not to let Detroit go bankrupt?

CNN’s Jessica Yellin reveals that it was only last night that the president decided to make a statement.
