What a weekend for Jeffco festivities
This coming Fourth of July weekend has so many things going on that the simple guide for the weekend is to just get in your car, drive two minutes in any direction and your bound to run into something fun. It’s jam packed with so many things that I’m just going to give you the highlights reel.
Of course, as I mentioned last week there’s the Golden Fourth of July festival going on in Lions Park all day capped off with fireworks when it gets dark.
But, July Fourth also happens to be the first Saturday of the month so the Golden Super cruise will also be going on. That means classic cars and hot rods will be heading to South Golden Road from 5-9 p.m. and you can check them all out before the fireworks. They’ll be parked in every business parking lot and driving up and down the street so you can’t miss them. It’s free to attend and lots of folks just bring lawn chairs so they can sit and watch the cars go by.
If July Fourth is the first Saturday, then July 3rd is the first Friday of the month and that means that Golden’s First Friday event will be going on in downtown on Washington Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets. They close off the street and have stages with bands playing, food vendors, a beer tent and even loads of variety acts like acrobats performing. It runs 5-8 p.m. and is free to attend. You can grab something to eat and drink, dance in the street and meet up with your friends and neighbors.
If you want to check out something on the big concert stage, Red Rocks will be presenting shows all weekend long too. July 3 brings Umphry’s McGee with guests Papadosio and TAUK. Show time is 6:30 p.m.
July Fourth has Blues Traveler along with Guster and Hanson plus 3OH!3. This will be the 21st year they have performed at Red Rocks. That show starts at 6.p.m.
If you want to check out something pretty rowdy you can do a lot of head banging at the Rockstar Energy Drinks Mayhem Festival going on at Red Rocks on Sunday, July 5. This is the worlds largest heavy music touring festival and it’s going to be headlined by Slayer along with five other heavy metal and hard rock bands including King Diamond, HELLYEAH, The Devil Wears Prada, Whitechapel and Thy Art Is Murder. This festival starts at 4 p.m. and promises to be anything but a quiet, peaceful Sunday afternoon in the mountains.
Tickets and more information about all these Red Rocks shows can be found on their website at . Ticket prices vary greatly so check out the website to see what they offer. Red Rocks Amphitheater is located in Morrison at 18300 W. Alameda Parkway.
Now, if you want to see five bands, barbecue and party with the entire family on the Fourth of July and cap it off with a huge fireworks display right over your head, then check out the 13th annual DaveStock festival at 4058 W. 74th Street in Westminster. Actually it’s been going on a lot longer than 13 years, but they always bill it as the “13th Annual” event.
I attended this for the first time last year and it’s probably the most fun I ever had on the Fourth of July. It’s a festival of music and families and food and drink all wrapped into one. It’s got a real friendly vibe and everyone there just celebrates the Fourth like they did back in the good old days. It’s absolutely free to attend, open to the public. You just bring your own food and drink (there are grills available), lawn chairs or picnic blankets and check out the music all afternoon and evening. This years bands include the Bill Wright Band, Burnt Lips, Thick as Thieves, Craig Cornett and the Phast and Wreckless with Wild Mountain Honey opening the show. Magician Stuart Hayner will also be performing and the National Anthem will be sung by Rachel Jane Johnson. The fun starts at 2 p.m. and the fireworks by DeWayne and the Sky Pyros blasts off at about 9 p.m. For more information give them a call at (303) 426-9924.
