Lakewood’s lucky number 7
Lakewood senior Savannah McClease-Borden didn’t consider herself quite competitive as a soccer player from the time she began playing at six years old until she was 11. Of course times change and this young lady has certainly become one of the premiere players in the state.
McClease-Borden, who began her competitive playing days with RUSH as a youngster, has been a member of the Lakewood varsity since she was a freshman. And, once she began her sophomore season, she has been able to start every game with the Tigers.
She has helped lead Lakewood to a 6-2-1 record so far this season. And she certainly has high hopes that the team can finish on a high note.
“I didn’t play soccer until I was six,” McClease-Borden said. “It was a lot of fun, but not really competitive back then at my age. Physically I was stronger than most of the others in the group. I just wanted the game to be fun. I lettered as a freshman and I’ve always been on the varsity. Mid field has been my main position.”
It’s been a high school career that Lakewood coach Tom Noor has been pleased with.
“Savannah just plays with a lot of heart and it is pleasant to see how she works with the others,” Noor said. “It’s just interesting to watch the desire that she has to play. She always puts out a strong effort and has a great love for the game. She is very reliable and just works so hard to improve her game and help lead her teammates.”
“I don’t think I go in overlooking any team that we play or any individual,” McClease-Borden said. “For that matter, overlooking what I need to do. Right now I want to stay as calm as I can. And, staying calm is the biggest skill for me after these four years in high school.”
