Jeffco commissioner incumbents hold leads

As election night wore on, Jefferson County commissioner races remained close.

In District 1 – the northern part of the county that includes Arvada and Westminster – Republican incumbent Libby Szabo led over Democrat Marti J. Smith with 52.9 percent of the 252,427 votes counted as of 9 p.m.

District 2, the central part of Jefferson County, was a closer affair.

Incumbent Casey Tighe, a Democrat, held a 50.7 percent lead with 250,953 counted votes over Republican opponent Frank Teunissen.

With 30,409 votes left to count, Tighe’s 3,811-vote lead looked slim, but still likely to hold up Tuesday night.

Teunissen had no regrets about his campaign, he said. The campaign gave him an opportunity to become more engaged with the community and he plans to continue being a voice for the public.

“One thing I’m going to focus on,” he said, “is protecting the world’s biggest playground.”

Don Ytterberg, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party, said the evening had been exciting.

Voters this year have been thoughtful about candidates and issues, he said.

But that didn’t surprise him because Jeffco residents usually stay informed and have a high level of participation, Ytterberg said.

“They don’t just read,” he said. “They play. They get into the game. They vote.”
