Golden Elks give scholarships

On May 3, 2014 the Golden Elks held a dinner for the recognition of some special community members.  After a great taco bar dinner PER Jeannette Rogers MC’d the event and our ER Byron McElhinney passed out the awards except for the scholarship recipients was handled by PER and Chairman of Lodge Scholarships Leonard McBroom.  We gave 6 scholarships this year for $1,000.00 each to:

Addison Coen of St. Christen Academy

Tanner Bryson of Golden High School

Maria Fluitt of Golden High School

Courtney Thoemke of Golden High School

Emily Bernstein of Denver School of the Arts

Dale Nickell of Golden High School received the Colorado Elks Association Scholarship given to each Lodge to award.

We also honored Deputy Matt Britt as Deputy of the Year 2014, Golden Police Officer of the Year Sgt. Marcus Williams, Golden Firefighter of the Year Chad Wachs, Fairmount Firefighter of the Year Brian White who each received a plaque with our deepest appreciation.

Our Teacher of the Year was Kasey Sprinden who teaches high school at Brady High and also has been coming to our Tuesday dinner talks and leading discussions of the Constitution.

Our Golden Citizen of the Year was Ed Utsch for his work with homeless people, Veterans and his community recycling efforts.

Mayor Marjorie Sloan also signed a proclamation making May1-7th Golden Elks Youth Week in recognition of our youth programs including free dictionary’s to 3rd graders, our Americanism Essay Contest, Hoop & Soccer Shoots, Scholarships and sponsoring the Golden High School After Prom Party.
