Everything About This Furby Hacking Project Is Incredibly Disturbing

If you’re of a certain age, you probably remember the great Furby craze of 1998 and 1999. These lovable little robots were the toys that everyone wanted, and people went to insane lengths to get them. Believe it or not, they’re still around, and they’re much better than they were back then. They now feature LED screens for eyes and have their own iOS and Android apps!

As you might guess, the improved functionality of the Furby has attracted the attention of hackers. They’re seeking to alter the factory settings of their Furbies and make them do all sorts of things that Hasbro never, ever intended.

What they can do is pretty crazy.

A whole group of hackers is now trying to up the bizarre ante. Their Facebook page even provides detailed instructions on how you can take your Furby apart and reprogram it.

Luckily for humanity, these hackers are focusing on expanding the capabilities of their Furbies instead of turning them into monsters.

But if they start getting bored with that, there’s no telling what these hacked Furbies might turn into.

Those associated with the Open Furby project assure us that creating an army of killer Furbies just isn’t on their radar.

While I agree that an army of Furbies probably wouldn’t be able to do much damage, there’s a part of me that’s not so sure. I’ve always had a bad feeling about these things.
